You can power this with a minimal solar set up!

I will tell you what the minimum solar set up you need to power this AC. But first did you know both the smart aircon and truma air-conditioning units are made in China? and both are of similar build quality. However the smart air-conditioning uses 2 compressors which gives it incredible power to blow cold air. (You can see the video demonstration) We use this fantastic air-conditioning unit in our own motorhome and it’s amazing. If you have ever travelled to Europe in the summer months you will know how oppressive the heat can get. Often times it can be hard to sleep in Spain and Portugal in the height of summer which can ruin your holiday. This air-conditioning has a sleep mode which switches the unit on and off during the night keeping you perfectly cool.

Go Off Grid – You don’t need a massive solar system

We estimate that you could reasonably power this smart air conditioning system in the summer months with as little as 400 watts of Solar and just 2 Lithium 100 amp batteries. In sleep mode smart aircon can use 480 watts per hour or even lower. But in reality you will only need to regulate the temperature by turning it on and off as needed. You will not need to have the air-conditioning on for hours at a time.

In the summer months in Europe you can reasonably expect 12 hours of sunshine. With a conservative estimate 400 watts of solar can expect to yield 75% which is 300 watts x 12 = 3600 watts per day. To be even more conservative with the estimate of yield we could say 3000 watts of power generated from 400 watt solar panels. This would allow 5 hours of constant air conditioning use. But in realty it is much more likely that this air conditioning would be used intermittently. Bear in mind many motorhomes have at least 1 solar panel and 1 battery. To upgrade to a second battery and additional solar panel could cost as little as £250 for a 100 amp Lithium battery and £150 for a budget 200 watt solar panel. Just a quick note Lithium batteries are by far the best option because they allow you to use 80% of the power. A normal leisure battery will only allow a 50% power discharge.

You can power this air-conditioning using a Power Bank

The smart air-conditioning unit can easily be fitted under a seat or in a rear garage which many motorhomes have. Its very simple there are 2 outlets hoses and 2 inlet hoses and the power supply which goes to the battery OR power bank. So you could have 2 solar panels on your roof with a connection to a portable power bank and a connector from the air-conditioning into the 12 volt plug socket of the battery bank.
